Roblox Supports Apple in Antitrust Case
2022-04-04
After losing the last year’s trial against Apple and its fees and payment rules, Fortnite developer, Epic Games, appealed to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals. This gave a new leap to the US largest antitrust case. Another leading game developer, Roblox, immediately backed Apple saying that the company offers safety and privacy guarantee benefits that are worth the fees. More details are below.
Take Two!
It looks like Epic Games doesn’t have plans to step back and has serious plans to fight Apple’s fees and payment rules once again. Roblox played a big role in the original case and successfully protected Apple along with a team of former Central Intelligence Agency directors and over 20 former US national security officials. The entire “support team” got back to the courtroom on March 30 with an argument identical to the last year’s. It says that Apple offers an app review and approval process that ensures a high level of safety and security, which enhances the legitimacy of apps in the users’ eyes.
Epic Games' counter-argument states that Roblox obtains an exclusive free pass from Apple that lets the company distribute a collection of monetizable games via its official App Store gaming app. Apple’s senior director called these games “experiences” and Roblox changed the word “games” to “experiences” soon after the hearing. Besides, Roblox renamed itself into a metaverse company in quite a hurry.
