WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a highly anticipated update that will allow users to communicate with individuals on other messaging platforms. This major development, announced by Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, comes in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) implemented in 2022.

The DMA mandates that major tech companies enhance interoperability between their services and third-party platforms. Initially, Meta had requested more time to address technical challenges, particularly concerning the preservation of end-to-end encryption when integrating with third-party apps. However, Meta has since resolved these issues, clearing the way for the introduction of this new feature.

The company’s statement revealed that it took an additional six months of development to ensure a smooth and secure user experience. This extra time was devoted to perfecting the technology that allows users to connect with contacts across various messaging platforms while maintaining WhatsApp’s hallmark privacy and security features. Meta has also drawn on its experience with Messenger, its messaging service linked to Facebook, to help shape WhatsApp’s new interoperable capabilities. Despite the integration with third-party apps, Meta emphasized that the security and privacy of users would remain a top priority.

WhatsApp users can expect several new features with this update. One of the most notable additions is a notification system that will alert users to incoming messages from third-party platforms. These notifications will inform users whenever a new messaging service becomes available on WhatsApp. This functionality is crafted to ensure users stay updated, and well-informed, and provide a seamless way to interact with contacts who use different messaging apps.

To streamline the process of enabling this new functionality, WhatsApp will introduce an onboarding system. This process will allow users to choose which third-party messaging apps they want to connect with and how they would like to organize their inbox. Users can opt to keep third-party conversations separate from their main WhatsApp chats or integrate all messages into one unified inbox. For those who prefer to keep their communications distinct, WhatsApp will offer the option to direct third-party messages to a dedicated folder.

In addition to these new interoperability features, WhatsApp will continue to provide its app-specific functionalities such as message reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. The platform also has ambitious plans for the future, with options for group creation, voice, and video calling with third-party platforms expected by 2027. Meta is also working closely with external messaging services to ensure that WhatsApp users will keep enjoying a messaging experience that prioritizes your safety and security.
