In the latest development of the high-stakes legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, Epic has petitioned the US Supreme Court to allow a lower court ruling to be put into effect. This ruling could potentially compel Apple to alter the payment practices within its App Store. The appeal comes from Fortnite's creator, Epic, who wishes to overturn a July 17 decision by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals had upheld an injunction against Apple and put a 90-day hold on its ruling to allow the tech giant to seek an appeal at the Supreme Court. Epic has now requested the Supreme Court to lift this decision and allow the lower court ruling to come into effect. The original ruling could significantly disrupt Apple's App Store payment system, which is at the heart of this closely-watched case.

Epic Games first launched its antitrust lawsuit against Apple in 2020, challenging the tech giant's App Store practices. The game developer accused Apple of running a monopoly and engaging in anti-competitive behaviour, particularly with its 30% cut of in-app purchases. This legal battle has attracted significant attention and has the potential to reshape the digital marketplace.

Apple has defended its practices, arguing that its fee structure is standard across the industry and that it ensures user safety by maintaining a tight grip on its App Store. The company also asserts that Epic breached its agreement when it attempted to bypass the App Store's payment system.

As the legal battle escalates to the highest court in the US, the outcome could have far-reaching implications for tech companies and digital marketplaces. A ruling in favor of Epic could open the gates for other developers to challenge platform fees, shaking up the current dynamics of the digital economy. Conversely, a decision in favor of Apple could further entrench the tech giant's control and influence over its platform.
