Recent discussions have circulated regarding Bungie's potential development of Destiny 3, which is rumored to be in the works under the title Payback. However, following significant layoffs within the studio, new developments have come to light. A recent report from Bloomberg, authored by Jason Schreier, revealed that Payback was a spin-off rather than the next main installment in the franchise and was shelved by Bungie about two months ago.

According to Schreier, the team at Bungie is not currently involved in the creation of Destiny 3 and has not begun any plan for it yet. While there remains a possibility that the studio could take steps towards developing this next installment in the future, the present emphasis is firmly on enhancing Destiny 2.

Bungie is particularly interested in refining the user experience for newcomers to Destiny 2, aiming to provide what they refer to as “a smoother onboarding process.” The game has faced mounting criticism for being somewhat intimidating for new players, causing the studio to identify this as an area needing improvement to attract a wider audience.

Additionally, it has been reported that Bungie is shifting its content approach for Destiny 2. Instead of the traditional large-scale annual expansions, the studio plans to focus on delivering smaller, more frequent content updates to keep the game engaging for its community.
